Why Arsenal can do a Double take

Speaking on his icons.com website, Overmars added: "At the heart of so much that Arsenal are doing right at the moment is my mate Dennis Bergkamp. Arsenal fans have told me he's in better form than in 1998. I remain to be convinced because he was absolutely spectacular that year.

"He is on fire, though. He must be the provider of at least 70 per cent of their goals.

"I bet the board there are glad that Dennis stayed at Highbury last summer! It's great for him that he's involved in the key games this time. He missed the last few games of the Double season, including the FA Cup Final, with a hamstring injury.

"I've also been impressed by Freddie Ljungberg - he's getting a lot of good goals.

"He didn't play that many games when he first arrived at Highbury but he's improved so much since. He gets the important goals and runs like a terrier.

"Robert Pires, before his injury, also got many goals. This is important, as you cannot just rely on your strikers for all the goals if you're to win things.

"It doesn't matter so much that Thierry Henry has dried up a little bit because the other players can score, too.

"It was the same when I was there. When we won the Double, I contributed-many goals (16), just as Ljungberg does now.

"Another similarity is the spirit. When I played in a friendly at Highbury this time last year, I felt the spirit wasn't quite the same as it was in 1998. Now, it looks like they have a good bond and are fighting for each other. That's so important, as you'll win nothing without team spirit."

Manchester United's Ryan Giggs, whose semi-final replay wonder goal at Villa Park prevented Arsenal from reaching a second successive FA Cup Final in 1999, is planning to wreak similar havoc against Arsene Wenger's team tonight.

Giggs, still reeling from United's exit from the Champions League at Bayer Leverkusen last week, said on his icons.com website: "It's vital we take the race down to the last game of the season by beating them on our own patch."

Victory for United tonight will mean Arsenal have to beat Everton at Highbury on Saturday to clinch the title.

"But, if United are going to push Arsenal to the limit, they will probably have to do so without Juan Sebastian Veron.

The Argentinian is still struggling with an Achilles tendon injury and, according to Giggs, has been wrongly blamed for United's demise in Europe.

"Some people seem determined to lay all the blame for our failure solely at Seba's door and that is totally unjustified," said Giggs. "I know I was far from my best in Germany and a lot of the other players feel the same way about their own performances.

"We just didn't play well enough and it is disgusting that Seba is being singled out as scapegoat.

"It seems there is a conspiracy against Seba in certain quarters. It's been nothing short of a character assassination.

"Maybe it's the amount of money the club paid for him or the fact that he's South American, but the knives have been out for him from almost the start.

"For me, Seba's range of passing from the middle of the park has brought another dimension to the United midfield this season and when he's really on top of his game, he's capable of doing things that no other player in the Premiership is capable of.

"I think the people who have been criticising him either haven't been to Old Trafford this season or they must be blind.

"As far as all the rumours about Seba being an unpopular figure in the dressing room, that's complete rubbish."
