In the latter, four contenders actually hold an entry in Newmarket's mile classic - Down To The Woods, Clearing, Bram Stoker and Palanzo. John Gosden's entry here may not be the best of his Classic hopefuls - he has an unusually high number of entries in the Guineas and Derby this year - but Clearing's Horris Hill success at Newbury last October looks good enough to take this.
He improved with every outing in 2000, culminating in that three-and-a-half length defeat of Prizeman when showing a really likeable attitude to get on terms with the leaders and then really asserting in the final furlong. He is one of the more certain stay-ers in this field - the stiff uphill finish may find out the likes of Down To The Woods, Bram Stoker and Reel Buddy. Shaard and Palanzo may pose the biggest threats.
