Paddington station was evacuated this morning after a fire alert.

Passengers were told to leave the station at about 9.15am today when a fire alarm was triggered.

Trains were being held on platforms while firefighters from the London Fire Brigade attended the scene.

A spokeswoman for the brigade said fire crews were called after a fire alarm was activated.

She later said firefighters found no evidence of a fire or smoke.

A spokeswoman for Great Western Railway tweeted: "Due to fire alarms being triggered at Paddington trains are at a stand still and passengers are being evacuated."

The station was closed for just under 25 minutes while emergency crews investigated.

The fire alert caused delays for some train users.

Darryl Harris tweeted: "All back in the station. Paddington trying to get back to normal... Now just get me back to Bath please."

Helen Belcher said: "So not only was my train delayed by 5 minutes and direct tube line closed, but now Paddington is closed too. #GoingToBeLate #CrowdedTube".

Another person said: "So looking forward to weekend in Devon however now evacuated from Paddington station."

In an update at 9.40am, a spokeswoman for Great Western Railway said: "Trains are now on the move to and from Paddington but some delays still likely as a result of the earlier fire alarm sounding."
