Two men were injured in a stabbing incident in Portobello Road in west London in the early hours.

A 19-year-old man was rushed to hospital with a stab wound after an “altercation” involving a group of men shortly before 1am on Friday.

A second man, 25, later visited hospital with a suspected stab wound related to the incident.

He was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.

He has been discharged from hospital and remains in police custody.

The teenager was taken to a major trauma centre by London Ambulance Service.

Police said they were awaiting an update on his condition.

The incident meant Portobello Road Market was closed this morning.

Parts have since reopened but some areas remain shut, including the vintage clothes market and food market.

In a statement online the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea said this morning: “Due to police activity following incidents on Portobello Road overnight, opening the markets and cleaning up the streets nearby will be delayed. Our staff are waiting and ready to open things up as soon as possible.”

In an updated at 1.41pm the council said: “Parts of Portobello Market are open but some areas will remain closed for today (Friday 10 July), including the vintage clothes market and food market. More updates to follow on when the market will fully reopen.”

Pictures from the scene this morning showed a police cordon and officers on the scene.

The cordon was at the junction of Cambridge Gardens and Portobello Road, sealing off some of the adjacent shops and pavement towards Oxford Gardens, MyLondon reported.

Access via Acklam Road was also reportedly blocked.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “At 00:58hrs on Friday, 10 July, police were called to reports of an altercation involving a group of men.

“Officers attended with the London Ambulance Service and a 19-year-old man was taken to hospital following a stab injury. He remains in hospital, and we await an update on his condition.

“A 25-year-old man was subsequently arrested for grievous bodily harm and violent disorder after presenting at hospital with a suspect stab injury. He has been discharged and remains in police custody.

“A cordon will remain in place at the scene as enquiries continue.”

A London Ambulance Spokesperson said: “We sent resources to the scene including ambulance crews, paramedics in fast response cars and an incident response officer. We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London’s Air Ambulance.

“The first paramedic arrived on the scene in less than five minutes.

“We treated a patient at the scene and took them to a major trauma centre by road”.

Portobello Road is one of the world’s most famous street markets and is visited by tens of thousands of Londoners and tourists each week.

On Fridays and Saturdays the market stalls stretch a mile along Portobello Road and round the corner into Golborne Road.
