Spurs is first club to back women’s night safety charter

Tottenham Hotspur have become the first football club to sign Sadiq Khan’s Women’s Night Safety Charter.

First launched in 2018, it is a London-wide initiative to try to tackle violence against women and girls.

Organisations such as the O2, Transport for London and the Ministry of Sound have signed up but Spurs are the first football club to do so.

Spurs’ executive director Donna-Maria Cullen said: “Violence towards women and girls is unacceptable and we are committed to supporting the Mayor in making our city safe and welcoming for all at night.” Signing up means a vow to:

* Nominate a champion within an organisation who actively promotes women’s night safety.

* Demonstrate to staff and customers. that their organisation takes women’s safety at night seriously.

* Encourage reporting by victims and bystanders.

* Train staff to ensure all women who report are believed.

* Train staff to ensure all reports are recorded and responded to.

* Design public spaces and workplaces to make them safer for women at night.

Amy Lamé, London’s night czar, said she was “delighted” Spurs had joined more than 1,500 organisations across London backing the charter.
