BMW currently has two hybrid vehicles in the range, but the X5 xDrive40e and the i8 are to be joined by three more. The 225xe, 330e and 740e will all be on sale early in 2016.

The flagship model will be the 740e, which will come in both short- and long-wheelbase forms. These will be two-wheel drive although the LWB variant will have four-wheel drive in the 740Le xDrive version. Figures you want are: 321bhp, 369lb ft of torque, 134.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 49g/km. In electric-only mode, this large petrol hybrid can cover 25 miles.

The 740e uses the same hybrid system as the X5 xDrive40e, and a detuned version of that goes in the 330e. Working with a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine along with the electric motor, it produces 248bhp with 310lb ft of torque. Consumption will be 148.7mpg with 44g/km of CO2. Like the 740e, electric power alone is good for a claimed 25 miles.

The smallest hybrid is the 225xe Active Tourer. Unlike the other two, this leans on the technology from the i8 and so offers all-wheel drive, depending on the conditions under the wheels.

The 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine gives 134bhp and the electric motor gives 88bhp. Once they combine you have 221bhp, with 284lb ft of torque. Consumption should be 141.2mpg with only 46g/km of CO2. Like the others, it has a claimed electric range of 25 miles.

Prices for the 225xe start at £35,005, and £33,935 for the 330e. A price for the 740e has not yet been announced. Further hybrid models are expected to join the line-up during 2016.
