Alliance companies plan to offer more than ten self-driving cars by the end of the decade

The Renault-Nissan Alliance is set to spawn a family of cars that can drive themselves.

Between the two companies, the Alliance expects to introduce more than ten new cars by 2020 which will have some level of autonomous driving capability.

Nissan has already shown a version of the next Leaf featuring its latest thinking in autonomous tech. This puts the plug-in family car in pole position to receive these features – and beyond that, the companies are adamant that they will be ‘installed on mainstream, mass-market cars at affordable prices.’

‘Renault-Nissan Alliance is deeply committed to the twin goals of zero emissions and zero fatalities,’ said Alliance boss Carlos Ghosn. ‘That’s why we are developing autonomous driving and connectivity for mass-market, mainstream vehicles on three continents.’

On the latter point, the companies also plan to roll out new connectivity features across its everyday ranges in the near future.

The autonomous functions expected to be seen on Nissans and Renaults over the next few years include increasingly advanced lane-keeping followed by the ability to negotiate complex traffic flows at junctions.

This will all be available in Europe and the US, as well as in Japan and China. At this point in the systems’ development, Renault-Nissan is yet to confirm which vehicles will get the technologhy.
