While they were at it, they have made it longer and wider too, and lengthened the wheelbase. However, on the other side of the coin, the vehicle is also around 90kg less than the predecessor and it still stands 23mm higher than the A4 Avant, and that can rise to 34mm if you add in the largest, 19in wheels.

You also still get that all-terrain look, with beefy bumpers and sills, bash plates front and rear, more cladding inside the arches and roof bars. You can add in optional damper control as well as a drive select system which allows you to use an off-road mode for increased capability on the rougher stuff.

There will be a wide range of engines on offer with several based on variations of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, giving power from 161bhp to 148bhp. These will be joined by a 3.0-litre V6 diesel in a couple of forms, one of which will produce 268bhp. There will also be a 2.0-litre four-pot turbocharged petrol engine with 249bhp.

These engines will work in combination with a six-speed manual, seven-speed S-tronic dual-clutch auto or eight-speed auto transmissions, depending on engine choice. These all work with the four-wheel drive system which is standard.

The new car should be available in the UK during the middle of this year.
