New A4 is more exciting than it looks

The range of engines also includes an entry-level 1.4 TFSI petrol unit which is 30bhp more powerful than the 1.8 whose place it takes in the line-up. Over the piece, there are seven engine choices (three petrol, four diesel), all EU6 compliant; Audi says they provide like-for-like power and economy gains of as much as 25% and 21% respectively.

Behind the engines, a new six-speed manual is standard issue on all but the 3.0 TDI – which gets an eight-speed auto. The self-shifting option on the rest of the range is a revised version of the seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic system.

Moving away from the oily bits, the new A4 will have a more modern interior which, in true Audi fashion, can be embellished with no end of options. If you want your in-car ents from Bang and Olufsen, or to be able to open the tailgate with a wag of your toe, just flash the cash.

The cabin you put it in is bigger than before, with more room for your head, legs and shoulders whichever seat you end up in. The same goes for luggage – the Avant estate will take 505 litres with the seats up, or 1510 when they’re stowed.

The car’s bigger on the outside, too, by a couple of centimetres or so in terms of length and width alike. But bigger doesn’t mean heavier – the use of more modern materials and lighter seats means it tips the scales at about 120kg less than of old.

Talking of numbers, when A4 hatchback sales commence in November the ones that really matter will start at £25,900.

That gets you the 1.4 TFSI, with the Avant version of the same car adding £1400 when the estate side of the range goes on sale next April.

Arriving at the same time will be the range-topping Avant 3.0 V6 TDI Quattro. With its eight-speed tiptronic auto sending power to all four wheels, this will weigh in at £40,350.
