Every look from the Chanel Métiers d’art 2022 show

Every year since it was launched in 2002, Chanel’s Métiers d’Art show honours the craft of the house’s talented artisans.

For the 2022 show, creative director Virginie Viard celebrated their expertise once again by hosting a filmed fashion show in le19M, a brand new building in Paris, designed specifically to house the artisans.

Chanel recently opened the doors of the seven-level mega structure designed by architect Rudy Ricciotti on the northern edge of Paris (in the 19th arrondissement, hence the 19), which houses 11 of the specialist companies the brand works with. According to Bruno Pavlovsky, Chanel’s president of fashion, the goal of the space was to have 600 employees working under one roof while preserving their relative independence.

Now working in the space are embroiderers Lesage and Atelier Montex, goldsmith Goossens, hatter Maison Michel, feather worker Lemarié, pleater Lognon, and shoemaker Massaro. "It’s a vast, very open space, with a façade adorned with threads of white concrete, a garden, beautiful walkways, and a large gallery where exhibitions will also be held," says Virginie Viard, who asked Dimitri Chamblas to choreograph a teaser film that was presented before the show.

The collection itself was breezy and brightly hued, focusing on an everyday wardrobe of knit co-ords and dresses, jacquard bombers, jeans and oversized boucle coats worn open. Tweed jackets came with sweatshirt sleeves, while others had graffiti-style embroidery in twinkling coloured beads by Lesage. “Many of the embroideries are inspired by the structure of the building itself, such as those by Montex, which are very graphic and in silver sequins,” said Viard, whose goal was a wardrobe that was both “very metropolitan yet sophisticated.”

Even the eveningwear oozed cosiness, with organza maxi skirts paired with super soft belted cardigans, loose-fit satin tuxedo trousers with billowing silk shirts and three-quarter length white leggings worn with floor-skimming frock coats.

Every look was finished with two-tone heeled Mary-Janes in beige and black adorned with large pearls at the top, and several models wore long leather gloves ruched about the wrist. Jewellery took a more is more approach, with piles of long necklaces festooned and chunky bracelets on both wrists.
