Scotland suffered the first defeat of their 2026 World Cup campaign on Friday night as they were edged out 1-0 by Morocco. The deciding goal came early in the evening, with Ismael Saibari lacing a rocket past Angus Gunn with just 71 seconds played, and Scotland never quite responded. After a turgid first period, the Scots were much improved after the break but still struggled to break down their opposition, the champions of Africa.
Clarke made proactive changes in the second half, introducing Ben Gannon-Doak off the bench alongside Lyndon Dykes and Kenny McLean, but the goals would not come despite the match momentum swinging firmly in Scotland’s favour. For all their improvement, though, the match came and went without a shot on target. Morocco were not much better, only managing two.
There was controversy, too, as Scotland were denied multiple penalty shouts from John McGinn and Scott McTominay, and an injury headache as Kieran Tierney was forced off in the second half.
