Flat lives lack depth

Frantic Assembly pride themselves on making collaborative, 3D theatre. Over the years, they've integrated dance music and choreographed movement and text in a series of pieces reflecting day-to-day twenty-something intimacies.

For Peepshow, a piece about urban living, the group has collaborated with Lamb, whose soundtrack with live songs (performed karaoke style) accompanies Isabel Wright's text. The piece itself is set in an apartment block, ingeniously portrayed on Dick Bird's cut-away structure, in which three couples and one lone man live out their domestic conflicts, fantasies and loneliness as they occasionally interact.

When Frantic break with realism, they produce many witty and poetic Peepshow visual moments and dance pieces: a fight between one couple moves, dreamlike, around the entire building. The piece's problems run deeper. Wright's naturalistic text is often banal; beyond an admittedly poignant, surface portrait of 21st-century ennui the show itself has little to say.

Only Richard Dempsey as loner Richard stands out, but then his is the only character with any hint of a real story. Peepshow is a comment on the way that pop music offers a ready-made and ever-ready soundtrack to our daily lives. A 90-minute piece on that idea alone, however, looks seriously two-dimensional.
