Led Bib – Umbrella Weather review: ‘a gonzo jazz jem’

An explosion of drums, a shriek of two alto saxes and Led Bib come riffing into town with their latest record, a gonzo jazz gem that should please diehard fans and win over anyone with open ears and a thing for raucous, spontaneously composed musical adventure.

This time around the Mercury nominated five-piece paint a bit more groove and melodicism onto their wall of tumultuous sound, with wheeling keyboards and fuzzy bass wigging out Seventies style on Ceasefire and band leader Mark Holub drumming up some severe turbulence on At The Shopping Centre.

There’s space and foreboding here too, and capricious mood swings aplenty - this isn’t called Umbrella Weather for nothing.
