Tennis flicks' hopes for Wimbledon

Tennis doesn't appear to lend itself to the silver screen as well as other sports do — football, atheletics, boxing and even gymnastics have spawned memorable films, but tennis? Nah.

All that might be about to change, however, with this September's release of new flick Wimbledon, starring 'Master and Commander' star Paul Bettany and 'Spider-Man' babe Kirsten Dunst.

Bettany plays Peter Colt, a British tennis player considered to be on his 'last legs' professionally (enter joke about British tennis players here). He gets one last chance to win Wimbledon, and in those two weeks, meets rising bad-girl star Lizzie Bradbury (Dunst)...and romance blossoms…

Hopes are riding high that Wimbledon can be the first really good movie about tennis, as it's a struggle to find anything else out there.

Woeful 1979 flick Racquet has been called by some as perhaps the 'worst movie ever made' and Luke Wilson sported a natty 1970's headband as failed tennis prodigy Richie Tenenbaum in the excellent The Royal Tenenbaums.

So, keep your fingers crossed for Wimbledon, otherwise that good tennis film may be even more elusive...
