When is Snowpiercer released on Netflix and who's in the cast of the Bong Joon-ho sci-fi series?

Having made Oscars history with Parasite back in February, Bong Joon-ho has turned his attention to the small screen for a fresh adaptation of Snowpiercer.

The sci-fi series - which like Parasite, is dripping in dark wit and cutting social commentary - is based on the French graphic novels and film by the Academy Award winner.

It also boasts an all-star cast including Jennifer Connelly and Broadway star Daveed Diggs.

What is the sci-fi series about?

The dystopian thriller series unravels in a post-apocalyptic, frozen world - and is set in the year 2021.

The Snowpiercer is huge 1001-carriage train carrying the human survivors of the apocalypse around the world.

Class warfare and injustice persist on the train and like Joon-ho's 2013 movie version, the Snowpiercer series is based on the 1982 French graphic novel Le Transperceneige.

When is Snowpiercer released on Netflix?

The series has been developed over the past three years and will finally be released on Netflix on Monday, May 25.

Sadly, we won't be able to binge the whole thing as the streaming service will release just two episodes a week, with the next pair arriving on Monday, June 1 and so on.

Fans in the US and China can have already seen the series premiere on TNT.

Who’s in the cast?

Daveed Diggs, who starred in the original Broadway production of Hamilton, plays Layton Well, a prisoner scraping by in the tail-end of the train, addicted to drugs made from industrial waste.

Jennifer Connelly, whose credits include Requiem for a Dream and an Oscar-winning star turn in A Beautiful Mind, is the train's announcer, a honourable role which reflects her first-class position.

Other stars who feature in the series include Mickey Sumner (Frances Ha), Alison Wright (The Accountant), Roberto Urbina (Narcos), Katie McGuiness (Roots), Susan Park (Fargo), Lena Hall (All My Children), Sam Otto (The State) and Iddo Goldberg (Peaky Blinders).
