Great British Bake Off 2016: Jaffa Cake challenge sparks age old ‘cake or biscuit’ debate on Twitter

The Great British Bake Off reignited an age old debate during the first episode of the new series.

Some viewers seemed shocked that the 12 new contestants were tasked with making a batch of Jaffa Cakes during ‘cake week’.

Instead of settling the argument over whether Jaffas are cakes or biscuits, Wednesday night’s episode sparked a furious Twitter discussion between viewers.

One surprised viewer wrote: “Who knew a jaffa cake was an actual cake and not a biscuit?!?! Must be true coz Mary said!!"

Another confused fan wrote: “Jaffa Cake in 'cake' week but I thought it was a biscuit?”

On the other hand, many viewers finally felt vindicated by the fact that Berry and Hollywood are clearly in the cake corner.

“It's cake week, thus proving that the Jaffa Cake is NOT a biscuit #longstandingargumentended, “ wrote one person.

Another added: “Not only is #gbbo the greatest tv show it has also finally answered the unanswerable question of whether a jaffa cake is a biscuit or a cake.”

“I think this has settled the age old argument. Mary says Jaffa Cake is a cake, it's a cake. The biscuit apologists are silenced,” wrote someone else.

“The jaffa cake, while technically a cake, is socially a biscuit. The desert equivalent of cultural integration.”

Losing all context, another viewer wrote: “The "Is a Jaffa cake a biscuit or a cake?" debate is probably more contentious, controversial & intense as the #Brexit debate…"

Confusing things ever further, Hollywood appeared to dunk a pre-made Jaffa in his tea as he discussed the contestants.

“Hahahaha Mary's face of actual horror when he dunked the Jaffa cake,” a viewer posted.
