With a billion monthly users, WhatsApp is a major way that many of us keep in touch with one another.
Originally launched as a phone app, allowing users to send instant messages to one another free of charge over the internet, the service is no longer just available on smartphones and tablets.
Following on from the in-browser WhatsApp Web, a desktop computer version has now been launched, meaning Windows and Apple Mac users can access their conversations, as well as send and receive messages, pictures and more.
“Our desktop app is simply an extension of your phone: the app mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device,” explains a post on the official WhatsApp blog.
As with the smartphone version, WhatsApp’s desktop app will allow for one-on-one and group conversations, with the ability to send photos, emojis, files, and audio.
The app is available for PCs running Windows 8 or above, and Mac users running OS 10.9 and above. It supports desktop notifications and keyboard shortcuts.
