The former teenage singer in art rock band SCUM is now a 25-year-old widower, but although there’s a woozy, melancholy feel to his solo material, it’s far from a wallow in grief.
The title track, his son Phaedra’s two middle names, lopes along over a warm bassline and gentle acoustic strumming. Hazy Shades is a delight, sunny piano chords giving way to a weighty guitar line. Cohen’s nasal voice is the weak link.
Listen to it closely for lyrical confessions if you must, but the music beneath is better.
