Savages - Adore Life, album review: 'brave, bloody, and beautiful'

When Savages unleashed their nosebleed feminism with the magnificent single Husbands back in 2012, they sounded viscerally upset.

With their second album - which might be subtitled “Ten Songs About Sadomasochism” - their French frontwoman Jehnny Beth seems to have found a transgressive form of catharsis.

On the opening track, drummer Fay Milton barely bothers to keep up with Gemma Thompson’s scathing guitar as Beth screams “Love is the answer!” Elsewhere, she tells a lover “I want your fingers down my throat” and chides herself: “This is what you get when you mess with love”.
