At the age of 75, producer Giorgio Moroder has nothing to prove. His work with Donna Summer changed the course of music, but he’s worked all sorts of wonders for all sorts of people from Sparks to Coldplay. Now comes his first solo album in 30 years and the old dog has learned a few more tricks. As Moroder can’t sing, it’s mostly his luscious, evocative backdrops and a host of mostly female singers. Britney Spears has never sounded as mysterious as she does on Suzanne Vega’s Tom’s Diner; Kylie Minogue is unusually engaged on right Here Right Now and Sia almost steals the show on the exuberant title track. The real winner here, though, is Moroder himself particularly when he sounds like a rebooted version of his Seventies self on 74 Is The New 24, where his heavily doctored vocals add both grit and wonder. It could have ended in tears, but Déjà Vu burnishes his reputation.
