Dwight Trible - Inspirations review: 'a vintage-sounding album laden with feeling'

Mellifluous of voice and cosmic of soul, the iconic Los Angeles jazz singer Dwight Trible has lent his sublime bass-baritone to the music of everyone from Pharaoh Sanders to Kamasi Washington.

A meeting of minds with Manchester-based trumpeter, bandleader and spiritual jazzer Matthew Halsall has gifted us a vintage-sounding album laden with feeling, artistry and timely reminders: the sparkling washes of a harp feature on What the World Needs Now Is Love.

There’s an impassioned version of the Donny Hathaway and Leroy Hutson classic Tryin’ Times, which is as pertinent as it ever was, and a marvellous rendering of the meditative Coltrane ballad Dear Lord with heartfelt lyrics by Trible.

Halsall’s clear-tone trumpet soars on the folk song Black Is The Colour of My True Love’s Hair.

It is the album’s stand-out track but it is Trible’s otherworldly voice that lingers. Gorgeous.
