Zamora finds his feet with double strike

Bobby Zamora made an impressive start to his Spurs career by claiming two first-half goals in a friendly at Oxford.

The 22-year-old, who joined Tottenham last week in a £1.5million deal from Brighton, struck after only 21 minutes, calmly slotting the ball home from a Gus Poyet pass.

The Barking-born striker, who played in the same Sunday League team as new team-mate Ledley King, scored his second from close range after a mix-up in the Oxford defence.

Manager Glenn Hoddle was full of praise for his new signing, claiming Spurs fans are in for "exciting times" this season.

He said: "I was very impressed with Bobby. He looked sharp. He was bright and he was everywhere. He's got great touch. He linked up well with the other lads and we've got big hopes for the boy.

"Our supporters love Bobby already. He gives us extra options up front along with Robbie Keane and Helder Postiga. These are exciting times for Tottenham. We aim to get a lot more goals this season."

Zamora, who was a West Ham supporter as a youngster, has built a big reputation in the lower divisions, scoring 76 goals in 123 league games. He joined Brighton in 2000 from Bristol Rovers in a £100,000 deal. Rovers will also receive 30 per cent of the amount Spurs are paying Brighton.

Irish international Keane replaced the England Under-21 star for the second half and wrapped up a 3-0 win with a fierce drive from 20 yards. "Robbie was up for it. It's great to have him back after a fourweek rest," Hoddle added.

Oxford manager Ian Atkins tipped Zamora to be a hit for Spurs in the Premiership. He said: "Bobby is a real live wire. He pulled our defence all over the place. The lad will get goals at the highest level. His close control is phenomenal and at £1.5m he's a steal. He's got success written all over him."

Spurs have a friendly at Norwich tomorrow before heading to South Africa for matches against the Orlando Pirates on Saturday and Kaiser Chiefs on 29 July.
