Wounded Lions left without pay

Two of England' s wounded Lions have not been paid any wages since being invalided out of the troubled tour to Australia three months ago.

Lawrence Dallaglio and Phil Greening are still waiting for the Lions to compensate them for the injuries which forced both to withdraw from the trip before the start of the Test series in June. Since then, their club, Wasps, have not paid either player on the understanding that the Lions will foot the bill.

The tour organisers, the Four Home Unions, say that retrospective payments will be made once the claims have been processed but the English pair are braced for a further nasty shock. The Lions insurance policy does not cover them for the first four weeks after the tour which means that both will lose a month?s salary.

Dallaglio, therefore, stands to lose almost £20,000, Greening £7,000. Other clubs who have continued to pay their injured Lions pending settlement of claims will be denied compensation for the four-week period from the tour?s end on July 14 to August 11.

?I can confirm I have not been paid for the last two months,? Dallaglio said. ?I have a clause in my Wasps contract whereby the club do not pay if I am injured playing for someone else which is fair enough. They paid me up to the end of June which was a week extra because my last match for the Lions was on June 23.

?Fortunately, I have quite an accommodating bank manager. The Lions have said they will pay it but only from August 11. You?d have expected it to come through before now.?
