Workforce could stay in training

Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Workforce could stay in training next season but connections are undecided about whether to head to the Breeders' Cup at Churchill Downs with the colt next month.

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute had to endure a 15-minute stewards' inquiry at Longchamp yesterday before it was confirmed he had won his first Arc.

Prince Khalid Abdulla's colt showed great courage to hold off Japanese raider Nakayama Festa in Europe's middle-distance championship and according to Abdullah's racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe, the runaway Epsom Derby winner may be kept in training.

"It was a sensational training performance," said Grimthorpe. "The horse showed a lot of courage. After the victories of Rainbow Quest, Dancing Brave and Rail Link, to win another Arc is exceptional for the Prince. Ryan Moore gave him a great ride.

"I will have to talk to Prince Khalid and Sir Michael but I think there is a good chance he will stay in training next season."

Richard Hughes will appeal against the severity of a careless riding ban handed to him by Wolverhampton stewards on Saturday night, which could leave his dreams of winning a first jockeys' title in ruins.
