Wise won't walk despite fan clash

Dennis Wise might have placated a disgruntled supporter with a few words of advice and a handshake but there is no indication the Millwall manager is close to repairing what appears to be a fractious relationship with Jeff Burnige, the club's chairman-elect.

Speculation is mounting that Wise's position as manager is under threat but the former Chelsea midfielder, who took the unprecedented step of confronting a dissatisfied fan during yesterday's home draw with Leeds, insists he is unaffected by the rumours about his future. "It doesn't really bother me," said Wise.

"It has been a difficult time between me and the new chairman. I know the way he wants to go and that's entirely up to him. He hasn't told me my situation but I never walk way from anything. If he gets rid of me, that's fair enough."

Wise was "disappointed" at the club's decision to sanction the transfer of Scott Dobie to Nottingham Forest recently. The departure of the striker forced Wise to play 19-year-old Mark Quigley in attack against Leeds. He was one of six players aged 22 or under in Millwall's starting line-up.

It was the paucity of resources at Wise's disposal that prompted him to engage with an aggrieved Millwall fan early in the second half. "There are a couple of fellows who always seem to want to give people stick and what they do is start the other lot off," said Wise, rationalising his actions.

"I went up to see the fellow and said: 'Get behind us, I've got a load of kids out here and it's no good you shouting abuse at them'. He was fine about it, shook hands and that was it."
