Winston back after a bad break

Robert Winston, who suffered an horrendous fall at Haydock early last month, gets back in the saddle at Hamilton on Thursday.

The 22-year-old jockey was riding Jade Warrior for Newmarket trainer Paul Howling when his reins broke after a furlong of the Park House Maiden Stakes. He was sent crashing to the ground where he was kicked by one of the chasing pack and detained at Whiston Hospital with what was later found to be a broken jaw.

It was initially thought that he would only be out of action for a couple of days, but he has had to endure six weeks on the sidelines during one of the busiest periods of the season. The Dublin-born rider took Kieren Fallon's place as Lynda Ramsden's stable jockey and also rides for Tim Easterby. His agent, Richard Hale, said: "He's missed a lot of winners and it was sickening for him to get injured in June and July when Tim scores a lot, but there are some nice two-year-olds for him to look forward to at both stables and plenty of outside rides."

Winston may begin his comeback on the Ralph Beckett-trained Melograno in the opening race at the Scottish course. In the following handicap he could be on one of Easterby's pair, Drinkin Time or Court Music, and he should have some mounts for Linda Perratt before going on to ride at the Doncaster evening meeting.

He said: "I'll give it my best shot, which I always do. I know in my own mind that, if the horses are good enough, I'll win on them." Winston was Britain's champion apprentice in

1999. He insists that he has never modelled himself on champion jockey Fallon but their riding styles are remarkably similar. The enforced break has put him behind schedule. Last season he ended up riding 62 winners but he has accrued only 16 this campaign.
