Windies 'in 4am party'

Coach Duncan Fletcher stressed: "It's very important we look after our own game. If we start focusing on other things we'll probably forget about what we've got to do."

England's First Test victory was so spectacular, with Steve Harmison unstoppable and the West Indies losing 10 wickets for 34 runs in 18 overs, that it would be easy for them to get carried away.

But all they need to do to keep their feet on the ground is remember how close and competitive the Test looked for three days.

The West Indies see-sawed to 311 and might have gained a handsome first-innings lead if Butcher and Nasser Hussain had not withstood a fast and furious attack from Edwards and Best.

The third-wicket pair needed some luck early on, too, but their partnership of 119 set the tone for a reply which refused to fold until a psychologically important lead of 28 had been set. The West Indies, ever since they started falling from grace in the mid-1990s, have generally managed to fight back from a stunning defeat and Brian Lara will be keen for that to happen on his home island.

But England clearly have the early momentum in this series, a fact which even the cautious Fletcher does not deny.

"We must have an advantage because the confidence must be high, particularly among the bowlers," he said.

"As for our batsmen, if you take a bit of battering like Butcher did and then win that has to be a huge advantage. But when we get to Trinidad we have to play some more good cricket. It's as simple as that."
