William Buick's one in a million for proud John Gosden

Trainer John Gosden was widely criticised for ditching his stable jockey Jimmy Fortune last winter but that decision was vindicated following William Buick's big-race international double over the weekend.

The 22-year-old former champion apprentice can now hold his own with the best having guided the Gosden-trained Debussy to victory in the Arlington Million in Chicago on Saturday night and Dream Ahead to success in the Prix Morny at Deauville yesterday.

Gosden, who trained in California for 10 years before returning home in 1988, said: "I got some stick when I let Jimmy go but I have to look to the future, and, whereas Jimmy never ever spread his wings and attempted to gain experience of American racing, William set about to do just that when he was in his teens and I think that is important.

"William used to ride out regularly in the winter months in the States, getting used to the pace of races out there, and with racing having become so much more global these past couple of decades, I decided that I better try and sign him up before anybody else gets hold of him.

"We had the dream start together when Dar Re Mi won the Sheema Classic in Dubai in March but the stable had a quiet time until Glorious Goodwood. However, since then, things have really picked up for us. William's great asset is his ice-cool brain.

"He never panics and that is what won him the Arlington Million. Things got tight up the inside but he sat and counted to ten and when the gap opened he dashed Debussy through on the rails to get the money."
