It is believed that Wilkinson would be prepared to step down as coach of the Under 21 side so long as he is consulted about who takes over and that the side remain part of the education department over which he has the ultimate control.
What cannot be disputed is that soundings were made by the FA to Leicester manager Peter Taylor to ascertain whether he would like to return to the role of full-time Under 21 coach. This was done without consulting Wilkinson, who found the decision insulting.
It is acknowledged that Wilkinson has done some remarkable work as technical director.
His Charter for Football, based on the French prototype instituted by Houllier, has been recognised as progressive and necessary, as has been his drive for improved mandatory qualifications for management and the new National Coaching Academy.
