Robinson replaced his rival in the first half of Saturday's victory over Leicester - Dawson limped off with a calf injury in the 28th minute - and gave another assured display.
The contest between the two scrumhalves-will leave one disappointed, but Smith is poised to tinker with his playing resources to avoid leaving one of his star names on the bench.
"Matt has had a few runs at centre in training and he was covering for the centres on Saturday because we only had two backs on the bench. He's got the ability and the qualities to make a good job of the change," said the former New Zealand coach.
Wasps will contest their derby clash against London Irish on Saturday without centre Stuart Abbott, who was injured during England's match against the New Zealand Barbarians.
Abbott went off two minutes before time following a promising display in the Twickenham friendly and could be out for a fortnight.
