Performance of the weekend - Manchester United
Never has Sir Alex Ferguson saluted the crowd more joyfully than he did on Sunday. But there was reason behind his merriment, for an all-important 19th title is now so close to the grasp of Manchester United.

Goals from Javier Hernandez and Nemanja Vidic saw off Chelsea 2-1 and effectively vanquished the Blues' hopes of retaining their crown. Just one point is now required for United to be officially written in the record books as 2011 league champions.

"Knowing the players, they won't muck it up," declared Ferguson. "They will get a point there's no doubt about that. It's fantastic to be the most successful team in the country."

Despair of the weekend - West Ham
The nails are now nearly knocked in to the Hammers' coffin. The Londoners face an uphill battle to avoid relegation after their 1-1 draw with Blackburn on Saturday.

"It's my responsibility. I cannot argue with the position," said Avram Grant of his struggling side, before intimating that despite the result he had the owners' backing. "Sometimes people make mistakes," added Grant. "But everyone, from the kit man to the owner, wants West Ham to succeed."

Master of the weekend - Novak Djokovic
The Serb secured the Madrid Masters title at the weekend, and with it came an extraordinary stat.

After beating world number one Rafael Nadal 7-5, 6-4, Djokovic had sealed his 32nd consecutive win of an unbeaten 2011 - in fact, it's the best start since John McEnroe's 42-match streak back in 1984.

Despite his success, Djokovic remained humble and even praised Nadal, who lost his 38-match winning run on the clay court surface with defeat. "I think Rafa is still right up there before anybody," enthused Djokovic, who then expressed hope of prevailing in the upcoming French Open.

"It is definitely my goal for this clay court season to try to go all the way in Roland Garros," he added. "I'm setting up my form for that tournament."
