Wenger: Vieira is priority

Arsene Wenger today confirmed that Arsenal will not sign any more new players this summer.

The Frenchman bought goalkeeper Jens Lehmann from Borussia Dortmund for £1 million last week and is concentrating on tying star midfielder Patrick Vieira to a new long-term deal.

The manager's transfer funds have been restricted by the need to raise money for a new £400m stadium at Ashburton Grove but Wenger says he is content to rely on the young players the club have developed.

He said: "I do not expect to sign any more players. We have lots of good young players and I am pleased with their attitude. It is a year when I want to integrate some of these into the squad."

However, the prospects of one Arsenal youngster has dimmed with the signing of Lehmann. Stuart Taylor, 22, will stay as the club's No2 goalkeeper despite David Seaman's departure to Manchester City.

Taylor said: "I would not say I am disappointed because I am still young. But I am not going to make it easy for him. I'll fight for the place."

Sylvain Wiltord is a £5million target for French champions Olympique Lyon.

The Arsenal striker, who is in talks at Highbury about a new contract, has one year left on his present-deal and would like to extend that by another three. Arsenal are offering two more years. "What I am looking for is more security," said Wiltord, who is due back at Arsenal along with French teammates Vieira, Robert Pires and Thierry Henry this week.

Wiltord was the club's record signing at £11m from Bordeaux three years ago.

Lyon are desperate for a striker of proven experience after losing Brazilian Sonny Anderson to Spanish club Villareal, and failing to bolster their squad with any signings from the French league.
