Wenger hails Rooney

Rooney said: "The performance wasn't great but we got the win and that's what mattered. We probably started a bit nervous but we settled down after we scored and once we scored the second, I think we knew we were going to win the game.

"Of course there will be more pressure now, but it's not a one-man team. It's not all on me. I'm just a young lad and I'm here to enjoy myself."

His team-mates believe the 18- year- old striker, who became the youngest ever scorer in the tournament's history, is on course to become the star of Euro 2004.

Sol Campbell, who was also outstanding against the Swiss, said: "Wayne plays with no fear. The opposition will no doubt be more aware of him, but he has enough about him to cope with that. He's young, he just wants to play and he's intelligent with it. If they target him I am sure he will raise his game."

John Terry said: "Wayne is unbelievable, there is no other word for it. He does things in training which amaze you and nothing seems to affect him. He's risen to the challenge in every game so far.

"He's a quiet lad around the place. He loves playing his computer games and he seems completely unaffected by all the fuss. He just loves playing football."

Terry also believes he will be equal to any challenge which awaits him in this tournament and also revealed why the Everton star is so difficult to mark.

"I think teams will now look to mark him more closely but I think he can deal with it," Terry added. "A couple of times Chelsea have played Everton and our manager has told us to keep an eye on him. He's dealt with it, though. I think the bigger the game, the better he likes it.

"For a defender he's difficult to mark. He's always pulling off the front line and he also has the pace to go in behind and get a goal that way. He causes problems for defenders because they're not sure whether to go with him or not. We saw that yet again in the match against the Swiss."

Sven-Goran Eriksson also had nothing but praise for Rooney. "He is a fantastic player and a fantastic talent. He played very well against France and he scored two today, one more beautiful than the other. He is incredible. I hope he goes on like that for ther rest of the tournament."

The one problem for Eriksson, however, remains the poor form of Michael Owen.

The Liverpool striker was again ineffectual and was replaced by Darius Vassell after 71 minutes. The Aston Villa star made an immediate impact, unsettling the Swiss defence before laying the ball off for Rooney to score his second goal of the game.

"It's not a classic partnership, with one tall and one short, but they still play well together," Eriksson said. "Owen played well against France and he will be better on Monday. We will see goals from Michael Owen in this tournament."

David Beckham confirmed that the England squad had sat down with Eriksson to discuss the diamond formation.

"The diamond formation was mentioned before the game, but we all decided and the manager decided that 4-4-2 was the best thing," Beckham said. "The most important thing is the manager listens to us. We said the final decision was up to him, but we felt more comfortable in a 4-4-2 formation. We played some good football against the French in that formation so we felt 'why change it?'"
