Wenger: Be yourself, Tony

Arsene Wenger today backed Tony Adams to make a successful move into management.

The former Arsenal and England captain will be unveiled tomorrow as the new manager of Wycombe.

Standard Sport understands that Adams has accepted an 18-month deal at the Division Two club.

It is almost certain that he consulted his old Arsenal manager before taking the job and Wenger said today ahead of tomorrow's Champions League clash with Dynamo Kiev: "We wish him good luck. He wants to learn the job and he has all the attributes to do it. I think it is important you get in touch with the job and learn and he has a good opportunity to do that.

"He knows how to deal tactically with problems and what it's like on the other side of things. But it does take time to settle and adapt. My biggest advice for him is to be yourself and not to try to copy anyone else."

Adams was spotted watching Arsenal's reserves against Watford last night and it is believed he has enquired about taking some Gunners' players on loan to Wycombe, where John Gorman has been in temporary charge.

Former team-mate Freddie Ljungberg said: "He was captain for many years and I know he had close contact with the boss when he was here.

"I think he is going to do great and all of us in the squad wish him good luck."

Adams had been linked with a number of jobs over recent months including Watford, Reading and Crystal Palace. He had said he intended to complete a three year Sports Science degree at university before going into management but Wycombe have changed his mind.

Meanwhile, Wenger believes Arsenal can rescue their Champions League campaign with three points against Kiev. "We are not out of the Champions League yet," he said today.

"We want to turn things around at home. We had a bad start against Inter Milan but if we win tomorrow the team has still got a good chance in the competition.
