Welsh pride has Aussies gasping

Wales, billed as the whipping boys of the World Cup semi-finals, came up with a performance at Hudders-field last night that put England to shame.

They spent the majority of the second half under siege as Bryan Fletcher, Darren Lockyer (2), Brad Fittler and Ben Kennedy destroyed the dream. But it was wonderful until they woke up!

Barely 24 hours after England had capitulated against second favourites New Zealand, this honest collection of artisans turned the formbook upside down, and Australia found themselves in a contest for the first time.

When Wales, patched up and put out to play for their pride by coach Clive Griffiths and manager Mike Nicholas, walked off at half time leading 20-14, the Australians were dumb-founded. Australia had eased into an 8-0 lead after 11 minutes with tries from Brett Kimmorley and Wendell Sailor.

But Wales, with skipper Iestyn Harris defying the pain of an injured shoulder, were ready to die with their boots on.

Their inspiration came from a try from scrum half Ian Watson. Harris converted and suddenly Wales were alive.

Lee Briers, having the game of his life at half back, set up a try for the former North Queensland Cowboys centre Kris Tassell and then superbly stole the ball from Lock-yer's grasp when Harris hoisted a 'bomb'.
