Chris Coleman may be top for the chop but he must have been vastly encouraged by his team's start against Middlesbrough last weekend. Coleman is still wet behind the ears as far as management is concerned, but he will be realistic enough to know that the opening day was merely a solitary swallow rather than a whole summer. Coleman's Everton counterpart, David Moyes, was rightly lauded for his efforts last season, but the trick is to keep things going. With Wayne Rooney
ready to start his first game of the season, the Goodison Park club can surely look forward to a reasonable season, but this doesn't seem to be a bad time to play them.

Question: When did four Chelsea players last appear in an England senior international together? Answers on a postcard please. Claudio Ranieri has always said he would like more Englishmen in his team and has been as good as his word. But the probability is that the final couple of signings before the transfer window closes will not be from these shores. The doubt was always whether all these parts would come together effectively and indications were encouraging at Liverpool, where the visitors enjoyed themselves, especially young Roman, who signed autographs with as much gusto as big cheques.

Glenn Hoddle is having such a run of luck that, if he fell in a bed of roses, he would come up smelling of something unmentionable. Hoddle was on the wrong end of a bad refereeing decision at Birmingham last weekend and good luck to him for complaining. He is pilloried for making a mistake, so why shouldn't the same apply to referees? Spurs will have to raise their game to get off the mark against Leeds, who showed commendable spirit against Newcastle last Sunday.

Charlton were poor against Manchester City last Sunday but it is early days and Alan Curbishley will surely get an improvement from his team. The loan signing of Carlton Cole was good business. Cole would have become fidgety sitting on the sidelines at Chelsea, and a regular game with the Addicks can help his development. Curbishley's team need to beat Wolves since the general opinion seems to be that everyone will.

Sol Campbell thinks he's being picked on and you can see his point. Yes, we know that retaliation is frowned upon by the Football Association, but if Roy Keane had been on the end of that tackle in the Community Shield, young Eric might have lost one of his Djembas. Campbell is not a dirty player and, compared with some of the hatchet men of yesteryear, he is a pussycat. There seems little he can do, though, except take his punishment. Steve McClaren has been tipped as England's next coach but first he will be wanting to achieve something at Middlesbrough.

Millwall's new generation of peaceloving beatniks will extend the warm arm of friendship tomorrow, offering a nutritious pre-match meal of lentils and mung beans to the visitors, but Dario Gradi's side can expect a tougher reception on the pitch. The Lions have started the season with the bit between their teeth and should make it three league wins out of three to stay on top of the table.

The Merry Millers and Happy Hammers sound like characters from an LSD-inspired Sixties cartoon strip, but there will be little peace, love and empathy at Millmoor tomorrow. There's nothing like a trip to Rotherham, the town that time forgot, to bring one down to earth with a bump. West Ham are slowly coming to terms with their diminished status and could do with adopting some of Rotherham's industrial values if they are to return whence they came. A battling draw would be a good start.
