Warne will take share of £1.25m winnings

Shane Warne is to get a share of the £1.25million prize money his Australian team-mates picked up for winning the World Cup - despite being sent home from the tournament for using a banned substance before bowling a ball.

The disgraced spinner was handed a 12-month ban after he was found to have taken a diuretic pill, which is sometimes used as a masking agent for other drugs. But the Australian squad agreed to hand Warne, who insists he took the pill to lose weight, a share of the spoils and he could receive around £16,000.

Coach John Buchanan said: 'I believe he will get something as he was originally selected. As with any particular tournament or series, these things are paid out on a pro rata basis. It is up to the players how it is split.'

Warne's ban stretches until next February, but he has been toying with an invitation to make appearances this summer for Lashings, the Kent team who have already recruited his former team-mate Mark Waugh.
