Vieira given all-clear

Patrick Vieira was taken to hospital last night for a scan on a thigh problem but has been given the all-clear to face Greece in France's quarter-final on Friday.

The news about Vieira, who is 28 today, was a welcome relief for coach Jacques Santini who has a defensive injury crisis ahead of the Lisbon clash. He will be without full-back Willy Sagnol, who has again fractured his left arm. The Bayern Munich star had a metal plate inserted in the arm last March and was substituted against the Swiss on Monday after receiving a blow on the forearm.

Chelsea's William Gallas would be the automatic replacement but he twisted his left ankle and is doubtful for the match.

Santini may shift Lilian Thuram from his preferred role in central defence and recall Marcel Desailly to partner Mikael Silvestre. Juventus striker David Trezeguet insists that he can form a lethal spearhead with Thierry Henry despite suggestions that the pair are incompatible. Trezeguet said: "It is a pleasure to play with Henry. He can do everything."

Meanwhile, the hopes of Jean Tigana becoming the manager of France could be sabotaged by an impending multi-million pound court case involving his dispute with Fulham.

Tigana - sacked as manager by Fulham in March 2003 - is the favourite to succeed Santini who will join Tottenham at the end of the championships.
