Veron: I've not closed door on Lazio

Juan Sebastian Veron last night threatened Manchester United's long-term ambitions when he admitted he would consider a return to Italy.

The Argentina midfielder has struggled to find his best form on a consistent basis since arriving from Lazio for £28million in the summer after signing a four-year deal.

With the Italian transfer window now open, he is attracting interest from his former club and others hoping to take him back to Serie A.

Veron said: 'I have read about Lazio's interest and I can't help but be pleased.' Barcelona also want to sign him at the end of the season.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is convinced the 26-year-old will eventually find his true level and is desperate to keep him at Old Trafford. But Veron admitted that, although he has no regrets about joining United, he is struggling to strike up a rapport with his new club's supporters.

He said: 'Of course I am happy at Manchester United, so it would not be a straightforward deal to go back. But you should never close the door on anything - and that is something I cannot do with Lazio.

'I have wonderful memories of my two years with them. I won the title and the people always treated me very well. And I've got to admit that I haven't found the same enthusiasm and warmth from the fans that I had from Lazio's supporters.'

Veron played down ill-founded talk of a rift with David Beckham, saying: 'Stories saying I have problems with David make me feel bitter. They are lies.
