United, whose previous No.7 shirt occupants have included Eric Cantona, Bryan Robson and George Best, claimed last night it was all just a coincidence.
Veron, said a spokesman, was given a training shirt to wear. The numbers were different to squad numbers. Who normally wore No.7 in training, he could not say.
'We can confirm that Veron has arrived, but we cannot say anything more at this stage other than that he is having medical checks,' he said.
