Another British girl, Rachel Viollet fell 6-1, 6-0 to Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria but Hannah Collin was level with Emmanuel Gagliardi of Switzerland at one set all. Collin dropped the first set 6-1 but took the second 7-6.
Belgian pair Justine Henin, runner up last year, and Kim Clijsters both came through first-round tests against American opponents - Henin after a three set battle with Brie Rippner and Clijsters more comfortably against Samantha Reeves.
Clijsters, watched by boyfriend Lleyton Hewitt, won 6-2, 7-6 after a tight second set when the 19-year-old could not open up a significant lead until the tie break.
Her prolonged activity meant she missed the start of Hewitt's campaign on the Centre Court.
Henin, who could meet Clijsters only in the semi-final round this year, beat Rippner 6-2, 6-7, 6-1.
Former finalist Monica Seles breezed through her first-round match against unseeded Spaniard Eva Bes, winning 6-0, 6-0.
