Speaking last night, the United manager said: "We will discuss the matter tomorrow. We have made our intentions clear that we would like the boy. This is the first time we have actually said that. Don't forget Everton haven't said he is for sale. We have to wait to see what they say to be honest with you. That's the next stage."
Ferguson indicated that he tried to attract Rooney after Euro 2004 and was hoping to have him on board for the beginning of the Premiership season. "I was hoping at the start of the season but time ran out," said Ferguson. "I started thinking we had no chance.
"He has a great chance, the lad, but you have to remember that he is only 18. He is not the finished article, but he's an exciting young player. We've got experience of bringing young players and progressing them on."
Ferguson is anxious to boost his attacking options with Ruud van Nistelrooy, Louis Saha and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sidelined with injury.
Reports on Merseyside suggest 18-year-old Rooney has told manager David Moyes that he is ready to leave Everton, who are deep in debt but want £30m for their star.
