Tottenham eye new attack force

Tottenham coach Martin Jol is lining up moves for £4m PSV Eindhoven striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Chelsea midfielder Scott Parker

The Dutch international, 26, is out of contract next year and would cost around £4million.

A tall, powerful forward, Vennegoor was a key player in the outstanding PSV side which made the semi-finals of this season's European Cup. Having clinched the Dutch title for a second successive season, however, Guus Hiddink's side are now expected to be broken up.

Vennegoor is well known to Spurs sporting director Frank Arnesen, who used to work for PSV and signed him from Twente Enschede in 2001 as a replacement for Ruud van Nistelrooy.

His bizarre name dates from the 17th century when two farming families from Enschede region were united by marriage and neither would accept the loss of their name. 'Of' is the Dutch word for 'or'.

With Egyptian striker Mido suffering fitness problems and Robbie Keane's future unclear, Spurs head coach Martin Jol is keen to increase his attacking options. Keane is wanted by both Everton and Newcastle, although the Irishman has not given up hope of staying at Spurs.

Tottenham were also reported to be battling Everton for the signature of Chelsea's struggling midfielder Scott Parker. But with Vennegoor among several stars set to leave PSV this summer, team-mate Philip Cocu recently advised him to take Spurs' interest seriously.

The former Barcelona midfielder said: "I really hope he stays with PSV because he's a very important player for us. However, I will not be surprised if Tottenham come to buy him in the summer. He could be a very good player for them.
