"It was tough but when you look back at the whole tournament it's been a great 10 days for me and there's definitely plenty to build on for the rest of the year.
"I'm disappointed with my game today and I didn't think I played my best - but having said that I probably wasn't allowed to play as well as I would have liked.
"But certainly I feel positive about my game and you just have to reflect back two or three months, when I was going to Paris struggling a little bit, and things have turned around very quickly.
"So I'm really keen to build on that and I'm looking forward to having a big week in Miami."
Federer's fantastic start to the year has now seen him win 27 of his last 28 matches and he was relieved to have ended his hoodoo against Henman.
"It's great to have finally beaten Tim like this because the only time I beat him before he gave up, so I don't count that," said the 22-yearold.
"I was playing well all week so I was just hoping he wouldn't have one of those days where he is unbeatable, and it worked out fine.
"I've now won three out of four tournaments, plus my Davis Cup matches, so I couldn't wish for more at this stage of the season. It's been really incredible."
In the women's event, Justine Henin-Hardenne claimed her fourth title of the year with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Lindsay Davenport.
