Charlton manager Phil Parkinson suffered heartbreak when Derby's Nathan Ellington struck a devastating equaliser deep into added time to deny the Addicks their first win in 13 matches.

The contrasting emotions of joy and despair experienced when a last minute goal goes in are only too familiar to football players, managers and fans around the world.

1. Michael Thomas – Liverpool vs Arsenal – 26 May 1989

It doesn't get more last minute than this. It was the final minute of the final game of the season. Arsenal were leading one-nil but needed to win by two goals to take the league title when Michael Thomas broke through on goal

2. Ole Gunnar Solskjær – Manchester United vs Bayern Munich – 26 May 1999

Teddy Sheringham could have been forgiven for thinking his injury-time equaliser in the 1999 Champions League Final would be remembered forever. Two minutes later, team-mate Ole Gunnar Solskjær hit the winner even deeper into injury time and poor old Teddy's efforts were virtually forgotten.

3. Jimmy Glass – Carlisle United vs Plymouth Argyle – 8 May 1999

If Hollywood had come up with this storyline it would have been dismissed as too far fetched. It was four minutes into injury time of the last game of the season and Carlisle were bottom of the football league. They were seconds away from non-league football when manager Nigel Pearson waved goalkeeper Jimmy Glass up for a corner. The Cumbrian's custodian duly obliged, heading home the goal that preserved Carlisle's 71-year league status.

4. Geoff Hurst – England vs West Germany – 30th July 1966

It's very rare for a last-minute goal to be scored in the World Cup Final, let alone two. But that's exactly what happened at Wembley in 1966. Wolfgang Weber was West Germany's saviour when he struck an equaliser in the last-minute of normal time. But England weren't to be denied, and as the end of extra time approached Geoff Hurst bore down on goal. Kenneth Wolstenholme will always be remembered for his commentary: "And here comes Hurst he's got... some people are on the pitch, they think it's all over. It is now!"

5. Steven Gerrard – Liverpool vs West Ham – 13 May 2006

Steven Gerrard looked a forlorn figure as he hobbled around the Millennium Stadium pitch, suffering badly from cramp, with his Liverpool team only seconds away from losing the FA Cup Final to West Ham. But when the ball bounced in front of him, more than 30 yards from goal, the Reds skipper blasted one of the great cup final goals to tie the game at 3-3. Gerrard went on to lift the trophy when Liverpool won on penalties.

6. David Beckham – England vs Greece – 6 October 2001

It didn't win the game, but David Beckham's 93rd minute free-kick against Greece was as important a goal as he scored in his career. It levelled the scores and sent England to the 2002 World Cup.

7. Nayim – Arsenal vs Real Zaragoza – 10 May 1995

The UEFA Cup Winners Cup Final had penalties written all over it when Real Zaragoza struck from the halfway line in the 120th minute to break Arsenal hearts. To make matters worse, the goal scorer was ex-Spurs player Nayim.

8. Stan Collymore – Liverpool vs Newcastle – 3 April 1996

Often described as the greatest Premiership game ever, this match was always going to be decided by a last-minute winner. Unfortunately for Newcastle, Stan Collymore scored it to give Liverpool a famous 4-3 victory.

9. Delfi Geli – Liverpool vs Alaves – 16 May 2001

Experts confidently predicted a low scoring game as Liverpool and Alaves went into the 2001 UEFA Cup Final boasting the two best defensive records in the competition. The game ended 5-4 with Alaves' Delfi Geli scoring a 118th minute golden own goal to give Liverpool the trophy.

10. Jonny Wilkinson – Australia vs England – 22 November 2003

Ok, so it's not association football, but Jonny Wilkinson's winning drop goal was hit deep into extra time and won England the World Cup. Who wouldn't want to see that again?
