Selfies are a relatively new phenomenon but they've certainly made their mark in the world of sport this year.

Before the age of the smartphone swept across the globe we had to spend painstaking hours - or days - waiting to have our beloved self-shot photographs developed.

But now the gratification is instant as it becomes increasingly easier to share your moments across various social media platforms with a meagre swipe of a screen.

While most of your friends have given it a go and clogged up your timeline with various levels of success (no - you don't look like Kim Kardashian) athletes have produced their fair share of memorable snaps throughout the course of 2015.

Francesco Totti took the biscuit when he grabbed his phone moments after scoring for Roma against fierce rivals Lazio and puckered up for a snap in front of the Serie A side's adoring fans.
