Already down to the bare minimum in the central defensive position, Eriksson is desperate to play Terry alongside Sol Campbell against France but will not risk him if it means he could be out for the other group matches against Switzerland and Croatia.
If he is ruled out, Eriksson could turn to Tottenham's Ledley King but is more likely to stick with the more experienced Jamie Carragher, who filled in alongside Campbell in Saturday's win over Iceland.
Asked about Terry's possible absence today, Campbell said: "It's a waiting game, but I think Jamie and Ledley are fantastic players and can hold their own in the international circus."
