"What is happening is good for the club as football's finances are bad." he said. "If you have the finances you can buy good players and improve the team, but it is not everything. You cannot buy trophies.
"It is not only about money. You have to buy the right footballers, who can give something on and off the pitch. Money can be great as long as it is used wisely and in the right place.
"Roman Abramovich looks like he wants to do something amazing for the club, but I would offer a note of caution.
"Nobody can spend and expect instant success. I cannot say anything bad about him because he is spending money and so they have a chance.
"But Chelsea have to build team spirit and the right mentality. Our problem was a lack of consistency and they must get rid of that.
Zola also believes manager Claudio Ranieri can lead Chelsea to the championship, but warned he may only have two seasons to achieve success.
He said: "He has maybe two years to win the league at Chelsea and it is possible he will do so. Claudio has proved a very good coach, but I do not feel the new owner will be patient. You don't spend that money just to come second."
