Bernard Tomic dropped by sponsor Head after Wimbledon comments

Sports brand Head have ended their sponsorship of tennis player Bernard Tomic after the controversial Australian said he was bored at Wimbledon, and admitted that he had faked an injury.

Tomic was fined £11,600 for “unsportsmanlike conduct” -- thought to be the second-largest fine for a single infraction in the tournament's history -- after he called for the physio in a first-round defeat to German Mischa Zverev, before admitting it had been a tactic to "shift the momentum" of the match, which he lost in straight sets.

Afterwards, Tomic revealed he was not injured and said he "bored" and lacking motivation.

“I couldn’t care less if I make a fourth round at the US Open or Iose first round," the 24-year-old said. "To me, everything is the same. I’m going to play another 10 years, and I know after my career I won’t have to work again.”

Head released a statement reading: "We were extremely disappointed with the statements made at Wimbledon by one of our sponsored athletes, Bernard Tomic.

"His opinions in no way reflect our own attitude for tennis, our passion, professionalism and respect for the game. Therefore, we have decided to discontinue our collaboration with Bernard Tomic."

Daniil Medvedev was also fined on Thursday morning for similar on-court infringements, notably throwing coins at the umpire's chair following his own second-round loss.
