Swimming heats take on new meaning

Jacques Rogge is confident that construction delays at the Olympic pool will not upset the high-profile swimming events in August.

Organisers have been forced to abandon plans for a roof over the outdoor pool because there is not enough time to finish it. The decision has been criticised by swimming's governing body FINA because the roof would have protected competitors from the searing Greek sun.

Broadcasters have also been worried that TV pictures will be spoiled by glare off the water. But the IOC president said: "We had a meeting with the broadcasters and they are adamant that not having a roof will have no influence. They have already taken measures that will compensate for the reflection off the water.

"As for the swimmers, we have taken measures so that whenever they are out of the pool they can have enough shade. We have had world championships in similar climates in Rome and Barcelona without a roof. There is no athlete who has said he would not be able to compete without a roof. The roof would have been a plus but it was not needed."
